A Cabinet That Earns Its Place in the Room

A crockery unit is not just storage. It is the first thing people notice when they walk into a dining room — the piece that says something about the family who chose it. At Royalzig, we have been building these cabinets for a long time now, and we still approach everyone with the same care. The carving, the proportions, the way the glass doors sit in their frames — none of it is accidental.

What a Well-Made Crockery Unit Actually Looks Like

There is a version of a crockery unit that does the minimum, holds a few plates, takes up wall space, and blends into the background. And then there is the kind we make.

Our display units are built with classical European proportions as a starting point. The upper section typically features glazed or carved-panel doors that let fine china and glassware be seen without being exposed to dust. The lower section provides enclosed storage, deeper, more practical—finished with the same carved detail as the rest of the piece. Between them, a mid-shelf or display ledge with a molded edge gives the whole cabinet a natural visual pause.

What sets these apart is how they handle the details:

  • Carved pilasters along the sides, often with fluted or acanthus-leaf detailing
  • Crown moulding at the top that references Victorian and French classical forms
  • Turned feet or carved bracket bases that lift the piece and give it presence
  • Interior shelf edges with a subtle carved bead or ogee profile
  • Hardware in antique brass or aged bronze, chosen to complement rather than distract

None of these elements shouts for attention on its own. Together, they make the cabinet look like it belongs—like it was always meant to be in the room.

How Our Craftsmen Build Each Display Cabinet

The wood comes first, and it takes time

Before carving begins, the wood has to be right. We work primarily with seasoned sheesham and teak—both dense, stable hardwoods that have been dried slowly to remove moisture without stressing the grain. A plank that has been rushed through drying will move later: doors will stick, joints will open, and panels will warp. We have no interest in any of that.

Once the timber is selected, our carpenters dimension it by hand using both traditional tools and careful joinery techniques. The frames are mortise-and-tenon. The panels are floating, which allows for natural wood movement without cracking. This is furniture built the way furniture used to be built.

The carving happens slowly, on purpose

A crockery cabinet of medium size might take our craftsmen four to six days to carve, depending on how much surface detail is involved. The carving is done with hand tools — chisels, gouges, and rifflers of different profiles — and it is entirely guided by eye and experience. There are no CNC machines involved. Every floral motif, every acanthus leaf, every scroll on the pilaster is cut by someone who has been doing this for years.

The depth of a carved relief matters. Cut too shallow and the detail disappears when the piece is finished. Cut too deeply, and the wood becomes fragile, especially on the thinner elements. Getting this right is something that takes years to learn. Our craftsmen know it instinctively.

Finishing — the part most people never think about

After carving and sanding, the piece is finished in stages. We use hand-applied lacquers and wax polishes, building up layers slowly to allow each coat to penetrate the wood properly. The result is a finish that has depth — not the flat, plastic-looking shine of a spray-lacquered factory piece, but something that catches light gently and changes as you move around it.

For clients who want an aged look, we offer antique finishes—subtle darkening in the recesses, lighter tones on the raised surfaces—that give the cabinet the feeling of a piece that has been in the family for decades, even when it is brand new.

Where to Place a Crockery Unit and What to Consider

Most crockery units live in dining rooms, and for good reason. They keep the table clear, store everything you need for a formal meal, and give the room a sense of structure. But placement matters.

  • Against a full wall: A tall display cabinet with crown molding looks best anchored against a complete wall, rather than floating in a corner or in front of a window.
  • In a dining-sitting room combination: A lower display unit, something in the 5- to 6-foot height range, works well as a room divider without blocking sightlines.
  • In a kitchen with a formal aesthetic: A freestanding crockery cabinet in the kitchen is a growing choice for homes that want the warmth of wood rather than fitted cabinetry. Our pieces work well here, too, particularly in finishes that complement stone or tile.
  • As a standalone statement in a drawing room: A carved display cabinet does not have to hold crockery at all. Many clients use them for books, decorative objects, or collectibles. The form works regardless of function.

We are happy to advise on sizing and placement as part of our consultation process. There is no obligation involved — just a conversation about what the space needs.

Why Clients Come to Royalzig for Their Display Unit

Saharanpur craftsmanship: not just a label

Saharanpur has been one of India's most important wood carving centers for several hundred years. The craftsmen in our workshops are part of that tradition; many of them are third- or fourth-generation carvers who learned their trade from their fathers and grandfathers. The carving knowledge in this city is deep, and it shows in the quality of what we make.

Solid wood throughout

Our crockery units are built entirely from solid hardwood. Not veneer over MDF, not engineered board with a carved face applied on top. Solid wood through and through. This matters for longevity; solid wood can be repaired, repolished, and refinished. It does not delaminate or swell at the edges the way composite materials eventually do.

Fully customisable

We do not have a fixed catalog. Every crockery unit we make can be adjusted in height, width, depth, configuration, finish, and carving motif. If you have a specific wall dimension to work with, we build to it. If you want a particular style of carving that matches other furniture in the room, we can design that. This is what custom furniture should mean.

Honest timelines, honest pricing

A hand-carved display cabinet takes time to make properly. We are transparent about lead times and pricing from the start, and we do not overpromise. Clients who come to us usually want something that lasts — and they understand that things worth keeping are worth waiting for.

Crockery Unit – Frequently Asked Questions

What type of wood is used in Royalzig crockery units?

We primarily use seasoned sheesham (Indian rosewood) and teak, both dense, stable hardwoods well suited to hand carving and long-term use. The timber is slowly dried before it reaches our workshops, which means the finished piece remains stable over the years without warping or cracking. On request, we also work in walnut for clients who prefer a darker, richer grain.

How long does it take to make a custom crockery cabinet?

The timeline depends on the size, configuration, and level of carving detail involved. A standard hand-carved crockery unit typically takes between four and six weeks from order confirmation to dispatch. More elaborate pieces with extensive relief carving or custom dimensions may take longer. We provide an honest lead time at the outset and keep you updated throughout the process.

Can I customize the size and finish of my display unit?

Yes, entirely. We do not work from a fixed catalog. Every display unit we make can be tailored to your wall dimensions, ceiling height, preferred wood species, finish color, and carving style. If you already have other Royalzig furniture in the room, we can match the carving motifs and finish so the pieces feel like a set. Just share your requirements and we will take it from there.

Where are Royalzig crockery units made, and is the carving done by hand?

Every piece is made in our workshops in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh — a city with a centuries-old tradition of wood carving. The carving on our crockery units is done entirely by hand, using chisels, gouges, and other traditional tools. There are no CNC routers or machine-cut decorative elements involved. Each carved detail is the work of a craftsman who has spent years learning the trade.

How do I care for and maintain a solid wood display cabinet over time?

Solid wood furniture is straightforward to maintain if you follow a few simple habits. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid placing the cabinet in direct sunlight or near a heat source, as prolonged exposure can cause the finish to fade or the wood to dry out over time. Every six months or so, a light application of good furniture wax or wood polish will keep the surface looking its best. If the finish ever does get scratched or worn in a small area, solid wood can be touched up and re-polished in a way that veneered furniture simply cannot.
