It is heavy, it is warm in colour, and it does not warp the way cheaper woods do when the seasons change.

From there, the shaping begins. Carved rosettes at the door panels, moulded cornices at the top, turned legs or a shaped plinth at the base. The drawers run on wooden runners that have been fitted by hand, which means they move quietly and smoothly over time. Inside, you have the option for hanging space, shelves, or a combination of both.

What Wood, What Finish, and Why It Matters

People ask us fairly often why solid wood costs more than engineered alternatives. The honest answer is that it is not just about the material — it is about what the material allows. A carved leaf on solid sheesham stands up in relief, catches light, and holds its edges for thirty years. The same carving on an MDF substrate starts to soften within a few seasons, especially in India's humidity.

For our neo-classic bedroom collection, we primarily use seasoned sheesham. It is a close-grained hardwood, which means the chisel moves through it predictably. It takes paint, lacquer, and gold leaf without pulling or blotching. Teak is available on request, particularly for clients who want the natural grain to remain visible under a clear or lightly tinted finish.

Gold highlights — on carved edges, on mouldings, on pillar caps — are done with Italian gold leaf where the job calls for it, or with a high-quality metallic paint finish for more economical pieces. We are clear about which is which at the time of ordering. Both look good. They just look different, and we would rather you know before the furniture arrives.

Upholstery on beds and benches is done separately, using fabrics you choose from our swatches. We work with velvets, brocades, and faux silks most often. Foam density is chosen to match the piece — a headboard backing needs something firmer than a seat cushion, and we pay attention to that distinction.
